On tax day, Tuberville touts no tax on overtime: ‘We don’t need to be in the business of punishing hard work’
U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) marked tax day Wednesday by highlighting the no tax on overtime provision he helped shepherd into law, saying more than 25 million Americans have already filed for the exemption. Speaking on a press call with reporters, Tuberville pointed to IRS data showing the average tax refund is already 11 percent higher than last year, crediting the working families tax cuts included in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which President Trump signed into law on July 4, 2025. “No one likes to pay taxes, but thanks to President Trump’s working families tax cuts, Alabamians are getting to keep more of their hard earned money right now,” Tuberville said. Tuberville co-introduced the Overtime Wages Tax Relief Act in May 2025 alongside Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS), which was ultimately folded into the One Big Beautiful Bill. The provision creates a tax deduction on overtime wages of up to $10,000 for individuals and $20,000 for married couples, targeting middle and lower income workers. The deduction phases out for individuals earning above $100,000 and married couples earning above $200,000. Tuberville said the exemption is especially meaningful for law enforcement, first responders, and blue collar workers who regularly work beyond 40 hours a week. “For many Alabamians who are on the front lines of keeping us safe, including law enforcement and first responders, working overtime is just part of the job,” Tuberville said. “We don’t need to be in the business of punishing hard work. We need to incentivize it.” Sawyer Knowles is a capitol reporter for Yellowhammer News. You may contact him at sawyer@yellowhammernews.com. Katie Britt moving to shut down SNAP card skimmers who ‘undermine the true purpose of this program’
Alabama U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) wants to make sure the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is protected from threats of fraud. Britt recently joined the bipartisan Enhanced Cybersecurity for SNAP Act, legislation aimed at strengthening security protections for SNAP EBT cards. “Families across our nation rely on SNAP benefits to put food on the table, but bad actors are able to duplicate cards and steal benefits from the most vulnerable,” Britt said. “The Enhanced Cybersecurity for SNAP Act would update SNAP card technology and protect against cybersecurity threats that undermine the true purpose of this program.” https://x.com/SenKatieBritt/status/2042226645990318240 The bill would modernize SNAP card technology by requiring fraud-resistant chips and phasing out outdated magnetic stripes, which are vulnerable to “skimming”, a form of fraud in which thieves steal card information to create duplicates. RELATED: As clock runs out on SNAP for 750,000 Alabamians, Katie Britt and GOP race to fund benefits – Democrats ‘couldn’t care less’ These duplicate cards are then used to drain victims’ benefits, depriving families of critical food assistance. The bill would also require the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to revisit cybersecurity safeguards every five years thereafter to account for new fraud threats to SNAP cards. Britt is a strong advocate for rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse within programs like SNAP. https://x.com/SenKatieBritt/status/2039810573861294392 The legislation would also allow states to issue replacement SNAP cards within three days for recipients whose cards are stolen, cloned, or malfunctioning. In addition, it would provide support to eligible vendors and merchants to update their payment processing systems to accept chip-enabled cards. The senator wants to ensure that it serves the needs of the most vulnerable among us. She previously cosponsored the Keep SNAP Funded Act, which would keep SNAP funded through a government shutdown, and the Healthy SNAP Act to exclude soft drinks, candy, ice cream, and prepared desserts from being purchased with SNAP benefits. The bill is also cosponsored by Senators Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Andy Kim (D-N.J.), and Dave McCormick (R-Pa.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), John Fetterman (D-Pa.), and Bill Cassidy (R-La.). The bill is endorsed by a broad coalition of organizations, including the National Grocers Association, the Food Industry Association, the National Association of Convenience Stores, SNAC International, the Food Research & Action Center (FRAC), Hunger Free America, the R Street Institute, the American Heart Association, and Bread for the World. Dale Strong slams Lindsey Graham for going to Disney World during government shutdown: ‘Our country demands better right now’
U.S. Rep. Dale Strong (R-Huntsville) made it clear Wednesday that he’s not happy with some of his Republican colleagues in the U.S. Senate who left town during a partial government shutdown. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is still the lone major agency that hasn’t been funded by Congress. They enacted the full-year FY2026 spending for most of the rest of government earlier this year. Last week, Republicans in the Senate passed a bill to fund most of DHS, with the exception of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and parts of Customs and Border Patrol. They plan to approve money for ICE and CBP in a separate reconciliation package in the near future. “There’s no way that the people the fifth district that sent me to Washington, DC to represent them, there’s no way that they want me to cut funding to Customs and Border Patrol and ICE,” Strong said Wednesday on “The Rightside” with Allison Sinclair and Amie Beth Shaver. “What that would do, in essence, would set up the flooding of the southern border. Again, we’ve already got 15 million in this country that’s just absolutely against everything America stands for. But what this would do was create the next, the next opportunity for that to happen.” Republicans in the House blocked the measure last week, extending the shutdown. “And I’ve never been prouder of [Speaker of the House] Mike Johnson for standing up and saying, ‘Enough, enough.’ It’s time for Republicans to be Republicans and do exactly what we told the people we were going to do,” Strong exclaimed. “Fund the government. Fund CBP, ICE, the Homeland Security bill. Don’t partially fund it. Fund 100% of it, just like the House did. And I’ll promise you this right here, I can’t wait to get back to DC so we can get on the floor and expose who’s a part of this foolishness going on in America.” The congressman then directed some criticism toward U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who was spotted in Orlando last weekend, for taking a vacation while DHS remained unfunded. “I can’t help that some are down at Disney World doing some foolish stuff there,” Strong said. “Our country demands better right now.” Despite some of the initial pushback, Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, (R-S.D.) announced Wednesday they will move forward with the two-track approach senators unanimously passed at the end of last week. As of Thursday, the Senate has again sent its partial DHS funding plan back to the House where leaders adjourned without taking action after rejecting the measure last week.
