Democrats Turn Up The Heat And Force A New Vote To End Trump's Iran War

The Iran war is absolute chaos. No one knows what is going on. Trump veers wildly between optimism and claiming that the war will end soon, or threats to resume bombing and escalate the war. Trump doesn’t even seem to know where his vice president is or if he will be participating in negotiations. PoliticusUSA’s news and opinions are 100% independent. Support our work by becoming a subscriber. Subscribe now Democrats see a big opening as the war is deeply unpopular with the American people, and fear is growing among Republicans that they are going to get destroyed in the midterm election due to high prices, inflation, the war, and gas prices. Republicans know that by sticking with Trump, they are setting themselves up for almost certain defeat in November. Yet, they still continue to stand by Trump’s scattershot war policy. Senate Democrats are turning up the pressure on Trump by forcing the Senate to hold a vote every week on a war powers resolution that would force Trump to end the war. Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) announced that on Tuesday, she will force the Senate to vote on a war powers resolution to end Trump’s war in Iran. Baldwin is part of a group of Democratic Senators who are committed to making Republicans put their support for Trump’s unpopular war on the public record over and over again. Read more

Democrats Move To Impeach Pete Hegseth For Reckless Endangerment Of US Troops

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) recently let it be known that his caucus was about to take steps to force out Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. Jeffries said, “We’ve successfully run out of town some of his Cabinet secretaries. I believe Pete Hegseth is next, and we’re going to keep our foot on the gas pedal to push this guy out.” House Democrats put their foot on the gas by filing articles of impeachment against Hegseth. House Democrats filed articles of impeachment against Hegseth for high crimes and misdemeanors that include: Unauthorized war against Iran and reckless endangerment of United States servicemembers, in direct contravention of Article I of the U.S. Constitution and the War Powers Resolution; Violations of the law of armed conflict and targeting of civilians, including an illegal strike to kill survivors of an initial attack on a vessel in the Caribbean Sea and operations resulting in large civilian casualties in Iran that run afoul of the Geneva Conventions; Negligence and reckless handling of sensitive military information, including the unlawful sharing of classified information over unsecured communication systems like Signal; Obstruction of Congressional oversight, including ongoing efforts to withhold material facts relating to civilian casualties and operational conduct in Iran and Venezuela; Abuse of power and politicization of the Armed Forces, including the authorization of targeted investigations against elected officials like Captain Mark Kelly for exercising their First Amendment rights; Conduct bringing disrepute upon the United States and its Armed Forces, including the forcible separation of transgender servicemembers from the military. Any single item on the list would be enough for impeachment, but the whole list looks like high crimes crime wave. Read more

The Movement Begins To Impeach Pete Hegseth And Remove Trump

Democrats have been thinking about a different approach to holding the Trump administration accountable. House Democrats learned from Trump’s first administration that impeachment of this president was an ineffective tool. Impeachment of a president should at minimum be a public shaming that permanently stains a president’s record and legacy, but as the old saying goes, you can’t shame the shameless. PoliticusUSA is 100% independent. Support us by becoming a subscriber. Subscribe now Donald Trump and his Republican Party have no shame, which means that even if Democrats regain power in the House and impeach Trump for a third time, it is unlikely to have any impact on this president. Even worse, the public has shown that impeachment doesn’t matter to them because they voted in 2024 to return the twice impeached Trump to the White House, so Democrats have been considering a different strategy that targets members of Trump’s administration that could be much more successful than any third Trump impeachment could be. Representative Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ) announced that she will be filing articles of impeachment next week against Pete Hegseth. Ansari said: Donald Trump’s deranged statements – including one on Easter Sunday – are further entrenching our country and our world in another devastating, never-ending war. He’s threatening war crimes that violate U.S. law and the Geneva Convention, on top of illegal actions and atrocities already committed at his direction–including violence that has destroyed schools, hospitals, and critical civilian infrastructure. Republicans must join us in calling on the president to end this suicidal war before it is too late. So much is at stake, and those who continue to follow him blindly will have blood on their hands as well. The odds of a mass group of Republicans joining with Democrats to denounce this administration’s conduct of the war are slim to none, but Ansari had more to say. Read more

After Classified Briefing, Senator Calls Iran War A Disaster And A Debacle

The biggest sign of all that Trump’s war with Iran is not going well is that the administration still can’t give a consistent reason for why the war is happening. PoliticusUSA is non-partisan and not beholden to any political party or special interest. Support us by becoming a subscriber. Subscribe now Senators have now had two classified briefings, which are two more speeches that Donald Trump has given to the American people about the war. After emerging from the latest classified briefing, Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) warned that Trump appears to be moving toward using US boots on the ground in Iran. Blumenthal said:  I emerged from this briefing as dissatisfied and angry frankly, as I have from any past briefing in my 15 years in the Senate. I am left with more questions than answers, especially about the cost of the war. My questions. Have been unanswered and I will demand answers because the American people deserve to know. And I guess I am most concerned about the threat to American lives of potentially deploying our sons and daughters on the ground in Iran. We seem to be on a path. Toward deploying American troops on the ground in Iran to accomplish any of the potential objectives here. And there is also, as disturbingly as anything else, the specter of active Russian aid to Iran putting in danger American lives. Literally, Russia seems to be aiding our enemy actively and intensively with intelligence and perhaps with other means, and China also may be assisting Iran. So the American people deserve to know much more than this administration has told them about the cost of the war, the danger to our sons and daughters in uniform, and the potential for further escalation and widening of this war. A war of choice made by this president, not chosen by the American people with potentially huge consequences to American lives. Video of Sen. Blumenthal: Sen. Blumenthal was angry, but his colleague, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) was even more direct. Read more
